“Isn’t it true that the limit of our language is the limit of our world? And language is words arbitrarily meaning whatever they mean. That’s enough not to ban any word from general usage.” ~institcheswords
I love discussing the facts of the origin and development of words.
Exempli gratia, the word etymology means the process of analyzing a word to find its true origin. It comes from Greek, etymon “true sense, original meaning” + -logia “study of, a speaking of,” e.g.,
agape (n.)
c. 1600, from Greek agapē “brotherly love, charity,” in Ecclesiastical use “the love of God for man and man for God,” a late and mostly Christian formation from the verb agapan “greet with affection, receive with friendship; to like, love,” which is of unknown origin. It sometimes is explained as *aga-pa- “to protect greatly,” with intensifying prefix aga-. “The Christian use may have been influenced by Hebr. ‘ahaba ‘love’” [Beekes].
We quickly discover that the popular English phrase “Love is love,” is a loaded phrase that can mean any number of definitions and/or interpretations.
The Spanish equivalent to the loaded English word love can produce any number of different/opposing translations expressing an entire range of emotions: ranging from one’s desire to possess someone else; or jealousy to erotica depending on its context. They might actually be able to catchmorebeeswith a phrase like “Hate is hate!” instead.
This is the reason why when American politicians cheapen it with ever increasing frequency through their use of popular phrases like “Love is love!” The fuzz on the back of my neck immediately stands on end; alerting me to the possibility that we’re dealing with depraved individuals, on high.
Which brings us to the process of analyzing the meaning of the word dist•urbia which you may recall as the title to a popular song by the singer Rhianna:
A portmanteau that blends the words disturbing (or disturbed) and suburbia

The writer of Hebrews is warning his readers about the dangers of falling away from the true faith in the face of severe persecution. This is Nayler’s intention too. The tract reveals the importance of suffering within early Quaker spirituality and demonstrates that, in the way of Jesus, evil is always overcome NON-VIOLENTLY. Below is a simple summary of Nayler’s message:
Suffering leads to spiritual maturity and brings us closer to God…
To be fruitful in invention, it is indispensable to have a habit of observation and reflection; and this habit, our steam friend acquired, no doubt, from those who, to him, were old fogies. But for the difference in habit of observation, why did yankees, almost instantly, discover gold in California, which had been trodden upon, and over-looked by indians and MEXICAN GREASERS, for centuries?
David Jacks (18 April 1822 – 11 January 1909) was a powerful Californian landowner, developer, and businessman. Born in Scotland, he [illegally] ·emigrated to [occupied] California during the 1849 Gold Rush, and soon [illegally] ·acquired [occupied] several thousand acres in and around Monterey, shaping the history of Monterey County in the first decades of American possession. He is also credited as being the first to market and popularize Monterey Jack cheese. He was born David Jack, but took to spelling his last name “Jacks” once in California.
After several years working as an army contractor in Brooklyn, where he reputedly met Captain Robert E. Lee, Jack read about the 1848 finding of gold in the Sierra Nevada. In November of that year he sailed with an artillery regiment to California, arriving in San Francisco in April 1849. Having invested in revolvers Jacks made a $4,000 profit upon landing in San Francisco, and then took up a job at the city’s Customs House.
In 1850, Jacks moved to Monterey, initially taking up a job in the store of a fellow Scotsman, James McKinlay. By 1852 Jack had been elected Treasurer of Monterey County and began purchasing land in the area.
David Jacks married Maria Christina Soledad Romie (1837-1917) on April 20, 1861, in San Luis Obispo, California and produced nine children, with only seven surviving childhood. Maria was born in Oaxaca, Mexico on June 9, 1837, the daughter of John Frederick Romie (1801-1849) and Maria Magdalena Frohn (1801-1886), who emigrated to Mexico from Germany in 1835.
In June 1874 Henry Cerruti, in the employ of Hubert Howe Bancroft, interviewed Dorotea Valdez, whose father was Juan Bautista Valdez, a member of the Portola expedition. Dorotea lived in a pueblo, which she asserted was illegally obtained by Jacks. When Cerutti asked her if she knew him, this is what she said:
Señor Jacks is the owner of the pueblo. In my opinion he is a very mean man, a cunning rascal, and pious hypocrite. He is such a miser that he even denies his own wife and children the comforts of life. At the present time, Jacks considers himself a millionaire. But as soon the railroad begins to operate, many foreigners will come to settle here. Rest assured that is when Señor Jacks will receive the punishment he deserves. All we want is for some clever lawyer to take the pueblo land away from him. The American authorities sold land that did not belong to them in order to pay off the debts. This is land that nobody had the right to give away because it rightfully belongs to every man woman and child who was born in our town. When the pueblo owned the land currently owned by David Jacks, people could just go out and gather the wood they needed. Our horses and cattle could graze everywhere and nobody bothered them. Ever since this evil man obtained possession of our land, he has placed fences everywhere. Even the famous well where the pirates landed in 1819 is surrounded by a fence. Señor Jacks is a natural born enemy of everything related to our history. He even tried to gain possession of the crops by the bridge. There is a live oak tree near those crops and it is under that very tree that Fr. Junìpero Serra said his first mass on June 7, 1770.

A person devoted narrow-mindedly to material prosperity at the expense of intellectual and artistic awareness; or (as an adjective) ignorantly uninterested in culture and ideas. This sense of the term comes from the insulting label Philister applied by German students to their non-academic neighbours in university towns, likening them to the enemies of the chosen people in the Hebrew scriptures; it was given wide currency in English by the poet and critic Matthew Arnold in his book Culture and Anarchy (1869), which attacks the philistinism of the British middle class. Arnold usually applied the term ‘the Philistines’ to the prosperous bourgeoisie, especially to its nonconformist Liberal representatives.

Why did Jesus speak to the multitudes in parables?
With many similar parables Jesus spoke God’s ·message [word] to the multitudes—as much as they were able to ·understand it [hear]. Indeed, He would not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own ·disciples [disciplined students], he explained everything. ~ Mark 4:33–34 (cf., The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares: Matthew 13:24-30; God favored Jacob over Esau ·UNCONDITIONALLY [Prior to moment of conception] — “not because of works but because of Him who calls” ~Romans 9:11).
The disciples, bewildered by Jesus’ parables and wanting him to speak more directly, came closer and asked Jesus, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” (Matthew 13:10).
This is why He spoke to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” ~ Matthew 13:13
Jesus was revealing that they were indifferent legalists who did not understand the kingdom of God (cf., Matthew 12:10; Hebrews 5:11-14; Leviticus 5:17; Jeremiah 8:8):
13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by ·Christ [the Way; the Truth; and the Life Eternal].
English Standard Version
Jesus told his disciples that—in an incredibly important sense—the world is divided into two groups: those who hear and understand the parables, and those who hear but do not understand (cf., The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares: Matthew 13:24-30; God favored Jacob over Esau ·UNCONDITIONALLY [Prior to moment of conception] — “not because of works but because of Him who calls” ~Romans 9:11). The Gospel of Mark highlights this division when Jesus told the disciples: “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but to those who are outside everything is in parables” (Mark 4:11).
The disciples must have been shocked by Jesus’ response, and if we are honest, we will feel that same shocking power today. Parables reveal and conceal simultaneously. They divide their listeners into two worlds. In one world, a parable reveals the secret of the kingdom of God. But in the second world a parable is still just a parable, nothing more.
We now see more clearly what is at stake in the parables and why Jesus used them practically every time he taught. It turns out that our response to the parables reveals everything important about us, with eternal consequences. Each of the parables is a shocking revelation of the kingdom of heaven, so if we hear the parables and all we hear is a bunch of “stories,” something is profoundly wrong with us.
“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
6 One Sabbath while Jesus was passing through fields of standing grain, it happened that His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” 3 Jesus replied to them, “Have you not even read [in the Scriptures] what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him— 4 how he went into the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful [for anyone] to eat except the priests alone, and [how he also] gave it to the men who were with him?” 5 Jesus was saying to them, “The Son of Man (the Messiah) is Lord [even] of the Sabbath.”
6 On another Sabbath He went into the synagogue and taught, and a man was present whose right hand was withered. 7 The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely [with malicious intent], to see if He would [actually] heal [someone] on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him. 8 But He was aware of their thoughts, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward.” So he got up and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you directly: Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 After looking around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did, and his hand was [fully] restored. 11 But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with senseless rage [and lacked spiritual insight], and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
9 understanding the fact that law is not enacted for the righteous person [the one in right standing with God], but for lawless and rebellious people, for the ungodly and sinful, for the irreverent and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,
27 Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Healing on the Sabbath
10 Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had an illness caused by a spirit (demon). She was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are released from your illness.” 13 Then He laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood erect again and she began glorifying and praising God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “There are six days in which work ought to be done; so come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But the Lord replied to him, “You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders)! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? 16 And this woman, a daughter (descendant) of Abraham whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17 As He was saying this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things that were being done by Him.
10 A man was there whose hand was withered. And they asked Jesus, “Is it lawful and permissible to heal on the Sabbath?”—they asked this so that they might accuse Him and bring charges into court. 11 But He said to them, “What man is there among you who, if he has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful and permissible to do good on the Sabbath.”
“Woe (judgment is coming) to the worthless and foolish shepherd Who deserts the flock! The sword will strike his arm And his right eye! His arm shall be totally withered And his right eye completely blinded.”
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so if your eye is clear [spiritually perceptive], your whole body will be full of light [benefiting from God’s precepts]. 23 But if your eye is bad [spiritually blind], your whole body will be full of darkness [devoid of God’s precepts]. So if the [very] light inside you [your inner self, your heart, your conscience] is darkness, how great and terrible is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord].
The Cure for Anxiety
25 “Therefore I tell you, stop being worried or anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, as to what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing?
“History has produced a montage of flavorsome firebrands like Adolf Hitler, Vladimir Lenin and Chairman Mao. But Elfego Baca is not one of them. Elfego’s gentle manner, directness, and few words exude a level of confidence that is still unparalleled today.”

The US Virgin Islands’ attorney general has asked legal representatives for Brin, Pritzker, Creative Arts Agency co-founder Michael Ovitz and real estate mogul Mort Zuckerman to turn over any documents or information related to the bank and Epstein, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The subpoenas are related to the US Virgin Islands’ civil lawsuit accusing JPMorgan Chase of benefitting from Epstein’s infamous sex-trafficking ring while ignoring his sordid misdeeds.
The Journal said the four men could not be reached for comment.

Epstein died in prison in an OSTENSIBLE “suicide” in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Epstein was a JPMorgan client from 2000 until 2013. The US Virgin Islands is seeking damages in the civil lawsuit – one of two filed against JPMorgan Chase after its ties to the disgraced financier. The second suit, filed by an unnamed alleged victim of Epstein’s, is also underway in Manhattan federal court.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon will be required to give sworn testimony about the bank’s relationship with Epstein as part of the lawsuits, according to multiple reports last week. The bank had resisted calls for Dimon to testify, arguing he had no personal involvement in the matter.

Describe a decision you made in the past that helped you learn or grow.

“In the case of COVID-19, I made the conscious decision to ERR on the side of Wisdom and Scientific Method; rather than ERR on the side of reckless foolishness and fear-mongering. Which is my first major MISTAKE in a long list of MISTAKES I have made in the years since the initial crisis. My exceptional ability to recognize all of my own MISTAKES, as there is clearly more than enough blame to go around, most of which falls squarely on my own shoulders, as leader; bureaucrat in charge of managing the crisis, has largely allowed me to accept full responsibility for all my flawed nature and thus grow from it.” ~Doctor Anthony Schutzstaffel Mengele
The illegal lab was operational in California and the public safety risk it posed came to light in December 2022 when observant code enforcement officer Jesalyn Harper saw a green garden hose in a hole in the side of a warehouse which was believed to be vacant for more than a decade.

~ Mark 4:33–34 (cf., The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares: Matthew 13:24-30; God favored Jacob over Esau ·UNCONDITIONALLY [Prior to moment of conception] — “not because of works but because of Him who calls” ~Romans 9:11).
amoral (adj.)
“ethically indifferent,” 1882, a hybrid formed from Greek-derived a- “not” + moral, which is from Latin.
1. Said of a person: Devoid of moral sense.
2. Said of a human work, especially artistic: That of purpose dispenses with the moral end.
Jesus was revealing that they were indifferent legalists who did not understand the kingdom of God (cf., Matthew 12:10; Hebrews 5:11-14; Leviticus 5:17; Jeremiah 8:8).
Romans 2:13-16
13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by ·Christ [the Way; the Truth; and the Life Eternal].

In 1962, as millions of Chinese citizens were gripped by Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution and the Red Guards enforced a brutal regime of communism, a boy was born to a poor family in southern China.
Chen’s family, once respected in the village of Yellow Stone. Now, were among the least fortunate families in the country. The Chens belonged to the landlord class, despised for their “capitalist” past. Grandpa Chen couldn’t leave the house for fear of being beaten to death; the children were spit upon in the street; and their father was regularly hauled off to labor camps, leaving the family of eight without a breadwinner.
Da Chen, the youngest child, seemed destined for a life of poverty, shame, and hunger. But winning humor and an indomitable spirit can be found in the most unexpected places.
Colors of the Mountain is a story of triumph, a memoir of a boyhood full of spunk, mischief, and love. The young Da Chen is part Horatio Alger, part Holden Caul-field; he befriends a gang of young hoodlums as well as the elegant, elderly Chinese Baptist woman who teaches him English and opens the door to a new life. Chen’s remarkable story is full of unforgettable scenes of rural Chinese life: feasting on oysters and fried peanuts on New Year’s Day, studying alongside classmates who wear red armbands and quote Mao, and playing and working in the peaceful rice fields near his village.
Despite this background of poverty and danger, Da Chen grows up to be resilient, tough, and funny, learning how to defend himself and how to work toward his future. Da Chen’s story is both captivating and endearing, filled with the universal human quality that distinguishes the very best memoirs. It proves once again that the concerns of childhood transcend time and place.
Colors of the Mountain is a classic story of triumph over adversity a memoir of a boyhood full of spunk, mischief, and love, and a welcome introduction to an amazing young writer.
By the final pages, when he says his last goodbyes to his father and boards the bus to Beijing to attend college, Da Chen has become a hopeful man astonishing in his resilience and cheerful strength. Colors of the Mountain: A Memoir by Da Chen (cf., 粉碎四人帮)
